Donuts New gTLDs Purring Nicely

Domains Under Management for the new gTLDs operated by Donuts have increased by a third (34%) in the year to the end of August 2017 according to an update posted by Donuts this week.
Donuts are rather bullish in their update saying they’re “seeing robust uptake and renewals of Donuts TLDs across different geographies, different categories, different registrars and across many new TLDs.”
In the year to the end of August, an extra 1 million registrations have been added which pushed DUM to over 3 million. But as Donuts note, it’s still less than 1% of the 331.9 million DUM around the world at the end of June according to the latest Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief.
Renewals are also doing nicely, with 71% of all domain names renewed, and 184 of their gTLDs having renewals of 1,000 registrations or more. In that group, renewal rates ranged from 60% to 94%. So many Donuts gTLDs are experiencing very strong renewal rates and these renewals rates are on par with the “gold standard” of .com. Verisign report that the .com and .net renewal rate for the first quarter of 2017 was 72.5% compared with 74.4% for the same quarter in 2016.

Yet the “Top 10” TLDs accounted for just a bit over half of Donuts’ overall volume growth, year to date. Which means according to Donuts that the growth is actually well distributed across many different gTLDs and another sign of the health across the entire Donuts portfolio, and that the category of new TLDs is beginning to resonate with businesses and consumers.
Today DUM across the 238 new gTLDs they operate (including the 40 Rightside gTLDs Donuts recently acquired) stands at 3.152 million with registrations consistently increasing by between 500 and 3,000 every day according to nTLDstats. Their largest gTLD is .life with 149,200 DUM followed by .ltd (147,300) and .today (88,200).
In their penultimate paragraph of their update, Donuts note that “while the industry has a long way to go to drive mass awareness, Donuts’ initial efforts are attracting exactly the kinds of high-quality end customers that will help build an enduring foundation for success. As we enter the final quarter of 2017, we are optimistic for our category overall, and for Donuts’ business in particular.
