Windows Overhaul Poses Problems for Nokia

Microsoft Corp. just made it a little harder for partner Nokia Corp. to sell its new line of Lumia smartphones by announcing a software update that won't be available to current users.

The Finnish handset maker tied itself closely to Microsoft last year by agreeing to adopt the software giant's Windows Phone operating system for its smartphones. Microsoft announced this week it will launch Windows Phone 8 software this fall, but it won't be able to run on current Lumia phones.

That could make it harder for Nokia to sell Lumia handsets if customers hold out for phones with the upgraded software.
