Net TV ‘no threat to broadcast’

If the television doomsayers want to predict the end of broadcast TV courtesy of internet TV, catch-up TV and Google's YouTube, think again.
The global CEO of CBS Interactive, the world's eighth biggest online publisher, says catch-up TV services like Hulu and his very own cbs.com, the online portal for the top-ranking US TV network, CBS, are pluses. He believes online video streaming is a "rocketship" which is propelling broadcast viewing, not eating it.
"The biggest thing people need to understand is why online TV doesn't compete with broadcast television," said Jim Lanzon, who is in Australia this week. "It really competes with the DVR [digital video recorder]. The DVR introduced timeshifting; internet TV introduced playshifting because now we can watch TV on a plane, on the subway, places that you just weren't able to before."
