Google Chairman Gets a Chance to Make His Case in Europe

Eric E. Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, is expected to meet early this week with Europe's top antitrust enforcer in what could be one of the company's last chances to avoid years of further investigation, huge fines, and requirements to change the way it runs parts of its business.

JoaquĆ­n Almunia, the E.U. competition commissioner, held face-to-face talks with Mr. Schmidt in January about the commission's investigation into whether Google had abused a dominant position in online search and advertising. At that meeting, Mr. Almunia assured Mr. Schmidt that he would give the company a chance to offer a solution to the antitrust case without incurring a penalty.
