A Rough Guide to Address Exhaustion by Geoff Huston
Posted in: Domain Names at 28/09/2010 18:14
With IPv4 addresses nearing exhaustion, internet and IPv4/6 expert Geoff Huston has posted an article on his blog looking at a set of answers to the most common questions he has been asked on this topic in recent times.
Issues looked at are:
- What's the most significant challenge to the Internet today?
- What is an "IP Address" and why is it so important?
- Why are we running out of addresses?
- When will we run out?
- What's the plan?
- How many addresses are in IPv6?
- How do we transition to IPv6?
- When my computer supports IPv6 can I return my IPv4 address?
- What needs to be done to transition the network to IPv6?
- How long do we expect this dual stack transition to take?
- What about "address sharing" in IPv4? Why do we need IPv6 anyway, given that we could simple share addresses in IPv4?
- This all sounds like a terrible problem. Was this whole global "experiment" with the Internet all one big mistake? Should we have looked elsewhere for a networking technology for computers back in the 1990's?
